What the estimate includes

Know what is—and is not—in the number.

We select the lowest-cost eSIM bundle combination whose validity and estimated capacity cover the trip, then compare it with daily pocket WiFi tiers.

eSIM bundles: 1GB/7 days ¥640; 3GB ¥1,280; 5GB ¥1,760; 10GB ¥2,880; 20GB ¥4,000 (30 days except 1GB).

Pocket WiFi: light ¥440/day; regular ¥770/day; heavy ¥1,100/day, per router.

Included: data plan price and the number of connections needed when the group separates.

Not included: tax differences, shipping, pickup/return, insurance, voice/SMS, throttling and coverage.

Quick device check

Count a phone as eSIM-ready only when both conditions are true: it supports eSIM and is unlocked by the carrier.

  • Confirm eSIM support for the exact phone model
  • Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked
  • Check hotspot and fair-use rules
  • Check the underlying Japanese mobile network

Our method

A planning estimate, not a universal cheapest-price claim.

The calculator estimates a daily data need, selects valid eSIM bundles, and compares only setups that can keep both subgroups connected. A second pocket WiFi is counted when separate travelers cannot all use eSIM.

Coverage, congestion, phone compatibility and provider terms can outweigh price. Always confirm those details on the official checkout page.

Quick answers

Before you buy

Is pocket WiFi always cheaper for a family?

No. Group size, trip length, data use and days apart all change the result.

Can one eSIM be shared by hotspot?

Many plans allow it, but limits vary. The host phone must stay nearby and its battery drains faster.

Does this calculator guarantee coverage?

No. Coverage depends on the Japanese network, route, congestion and device compatibility.
